US Plast solid polycarbonate is a compact, transparent sheet that the manufacturer claims is 200 times stronger than glass, with half its density. It is manufactured in York, Pennsylvania, in an ISO Class 7 cleanroom with in-line inspection, and COPAL México supplies it cut to size for projects in Mexico.
What is solid polycarbonate?
It is a compact thermoplastic sheet with no internal chambers, offering transparency comparable to that of glass and significantly higher impact resistance. It can be cut, drilled, cold-bent, and thermoformed without cracking. US Plast manufactures it in thicknesses ranging from 0.76 to 12.7 mm with co-extruded UV protection on both sides, in accordance with EN ISO 11963 and EN 14388.
Technical Advantages
- Virtually unbreakable: about 200 times the strength of glass; notched Izod impact strength of 14 ft·lb/in (ASTM D256).
- Transparency: Up to 89 % of light transmission in glass.
- Temperature: up to 130 °C in continuous service; thermoforming between 180 and 210 °C.
- Exterior: UV protection on both sides and a standard 10-year warranty, extendable to 15 years under the manufacturer's terms and conditions.
- Special editions: diffuser, with infrared blocking, flame retardant, and FDA-approved for food contact upon request.
Applications in Mexico
Safety Glazing in banks, stores, and booths, sound barriers and protective barriers, machinery operators at manufacturing plants, partitions, and backlit signs.
How to Choose the Thickness
- 0.76 to 2 mm: thermoformed parts, faceplates, and lightweight protective covers.
- 3 to 6 mm: partitions, machine guards, windows, and signage.
- 8 to 12.7 mm: safety glazing, barriers, and high-impact applications.
