Spartech – Chapter ABS

PrintMax® is Spartech’s line of high-impact polystyrene sheet (HIPS) for the graphic arts industry. It is a rubber-modified HIPS that prints, die-cuts, and thermoforms easily, which is why it is the top choice for displays and point-of-sale materials. COPAL México is the representative for Spartech in Mexico.

PrintMax® Grades

  • PrintMax® GP: the standard grade for general use in signage, graphic arts, and industry.
  • PrintMax® ECON: A lower-cost alternative, manufactured in the United States with up to 85 % of post-industrial recycled content, with a matte finish on both sides. Its shade may vary slightly from the GP.
  • Triple opaque / blockout: blocks the passage of light, which is useful when the piece is backlit or printed on both sides.
  • Black and large-caliber: HIPS, 2.4 to 4.75 mm print thickness, for parts that require more thickness.

Printing and Finishing

Spartech indicates that PrintMax® is suitable for offset, screen, digital, and UV digital printing, and that it can be die-cut. Corona treatment is applied at the factory to both sides to enhance ink adhesion; the table shows which sizes feature this treatment.

Applications

Point-of-sale displays, hangers and banners, shelf and refrigerator graphics, exhibition panels, and permanent indoor signage for signage and visual communication y retail.

Limitations

PrintMax® is not intended for outdoor use or contact with food. For heavy-duty thermoformed parts, see the ABS FormPro 1102.

What is the HIPS PrintMax?

This is the Spartech high-impact polystyrene sheet for the printing industry. It can be easily printed, die-cut, and thermoformed, which is why it is used in displays and point-of-sale materials.

What is the difference between PrintMax GP and ECON?

GP is the general-purpose grade. ECON is a lower-cost alternative containing up to 85 % of post-industrial recycled content, with a matte finish on both sides; its shade may vary slightly from that of GP.

What is the purpose of the Corona treatment?

It increases the surface energy of the sheet so that the inks adhere better. At PrintMax, it is applied to both sides at the factory.

Is it suitable for outdoor use?

It is not specified for outdoor use. For outdoor use, another material, such as polycarbonate or acrylic, is recommended.
